1.2.4Meaning

Deecke 1888b:272f. compares the use of Lyc. ta-(di) in grave inscriptions with that of Greek τίθημι ‘to place’ in similar inscriptions of Lycia and thus assigns the meaning ‘to place’ to the Lycian lexeme. His assignment is correct and has been widely accepted (see among others Pedersen 1945a:18, 23f. et passim, Morpurgo Davies 1987a:221-224, 226-228, Melchert (DLL:59f.), Neumann 2007a:336 with further literature, Sasseville 2021a:309f.). It should be noted that ta-(di) generally expressed a horizontal placement, such as the laying down of a corpse (Sasseville 2021a:309f.), whereas tuwe-(ti) refers to a vertical placement.

The verb ta-(di) occurs with various preverbs, which may alter the way in which something is placed, e.g. eseri, n͂te ‘in’, hrppi ‘on’, n͂tepi ‘in’. There is even some indication that the preverb may have undergone univerbation with the verb, especially when apocope occurs in the preverb, e.g. ñttadẽ (TL 42b.2) from n͂te + tadẽ.

1.3.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

3sg. pres. ind. act. tadi TL 44c.55 (Xanthos)
    TL 44d.33 (Xanthos)

Differently, Schürr 2018b:65 takes apn͂tadi and epn͂tadi as substantives in the ablative/instrument case, which is not persuasive. It is preferable to regard them as verbs in asyndetic coordination and with close semantic ties, e.g. apn͂ tadi tetbeti ‘he places back (and) sets up’ (TL 44d.33).

[D.S.]

1.3.3Meaning

The Lycian B verb ta-(di) is used twice with the preverb epn͂ ‘back’, i.e. ‘to place back’. It takes as its direct objects ali ‘(something related to nourishment)’, pasbã ‘small livestock’ (TL 44c.55), and lacra ‘(something dedicated to a god)’. The meaning ‘to place’, just like its Lycian A counterpart, is generally accepted (DLL:129, Neumann 2007a:336, Sasseville 2021a:309f., contra Schürr 2018b:65).

The first two forms are taken as separate lexemes in Carruba 1970a:74f. There is however no reason to separate them. Contra Carruba (ibid.), the form te-en-zi (KUB 35.163 iii 12’) is more likely to be a participle rather than a hittitized 3rd person plural present. The ending in -za-aš (KBo 37.150, 7’) for /ts/ is caused by the following enclitic.

1.5.4Meaning

The sequence t[a-ba-ar-na-an munusta-wa-an˺-na-an-na-an te-en-zi is (KBo 37.150 + KUB 35.163 ii 10´/12) reminiscent of the Hittite sequence [ŠU]M?[-ŠU? M]U[NUSt]a-wa-na-an-an te-ez-zi ‘he/she calls the Tawananna by name?’ found in the festival for the Palaic pantheon (KUB 35.165 rev. 25’). The attestation of ti-wa-ni also seems to be followed by the Tabarna and Tawananna in the accusative singular. From an etymological perspective with PIE *dheh1-, the meaning ‘to place’ is expected, although a semantic shift to ‘to say’ as in Hitt. tē-/tar-(mi) ‘to say’ is possible. Therefore, the exact semantics cannot be verified for now.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to place’

The Hittite form tē- ‘to speak’ found in the suppletive paradigm of tē-/tar-(mi) ‘to speak’ has been reconstructed together with Lycian ta-(di) ‘to place (horizontally)’ as *dhéh1-/dhh1 (Eichner 1973a:80, Eichner 1979a:107-110, Melchert 1994a:294, Yoshida 1998a). Furthermore, Palaic te- ‘to place, call (?)’ can be added to this group, which makes the stem formation at least Proto-Anatolian. The primary formation must be considered parallel to PAnat. *dhóh1-/dhh1. This root verb can also be found in compounds, see PAnat. *u̯e-dhéh1/dhh1 and PAnat. *u̯V-dhéh1-/dhh1.

[D.S.]

3. Proto-Indo-European

3.1Semantic Reconstruction

PIE *dheh1- means ‘to put, place, set; to do, make, produce’, according to LIV²:136–138. Cf. also IEW:235, EIEC:472, Watkins 2011a:18.

3.2Morphological Reconstruction

The PIE root *dheh1- is the basis of a plethora of verbal and nominal formations. For an overview of the primary verbal stems, cf. LIV²:136–138. Best attested in the IE languages are, on the one hand, the reduplicated athematic present stem *dhé-dhoh1-/*dhé-dhh1- and, on the other hand, the root aorist *dhéh1-/*dhh1. The present stem lives on, e.g., in Ved. dádhā-/dádh-, Av. dadā-/dad- < PIIr. *dhá-dhaH-/*dhá-dhH-. In Greek, it was remodeled into an i-reduplicated type, with pre-PGk. *dhí-dheh1-/*dhí-dhh1- > Gk. τίθημι/τίθεμεν. For further traces of the PIE reduplicated present, cf. LIV²:136. The root aorist, PIE *dhéh1-/*dhh1, has reflexes in Anatolian, Indo-Iranian, Greek, and Armenian. In Anatolian, it underlies the root verb PAnat. *dhéh1-/*dhh1(di) (see above sub PAnat. Reconstruction) > Hitt. tē- ‘to speak’, Lyc. ta-(di) ‘to place’ (cf. also LIV²:136f.). Outside Anatolian cf., e.g., 3sg. ind./inj. act. Ved. ádhāt, OAv. dāt̰, OPers. adā, Gk. Boeot. (ἀν-)εθɛ̄ (beside regular ἔθη-κ-ε from a secondary k-extended stemBut cf., e.g., 1pl. ind. aor. act. ἔθεμεν < *é-dhh1-me° without k-extension.), Arm. ed < PIE *(é-)dhéh1-t (LIV²:136f.). For further verbal formations, cf. LIV²:136–138. In Anatolian, there is yet another root verb, PAnat. *dhóh1/*dhh1‑´ ‘to put’, which belongs to the ḫi-conjugation and is continued by Hitt. dāi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘id.’ and, with reanalysis of the stem, Luw. /tuwa-(i)/ ‘to put, set up’, Lyc. tuwe-(ti) ‘to set up’, Lyd. cuwe- ‘id.’. – There are also numerous nominal formations based on *dheh1-; cf., among others, PIE *dhéh1-men- n. (Ved. dhā́man- n. ‘seat, stay, basis, etc.’, OAv. dāman- n. ‘place, dwelling-place’, Gk. θῆμα n. ‘tomb’, ἀνά-θημα n. ‘votive offering’), PIE *dhh1-tó- verbal adj. ‘placed, put’ (Ved. hitá-, Gk. θετός, Lat. -ditus), PIE *dh(e)h1-ti- (Ved. vaná-dhiti- ‘layer of wood pieces, wood layer’, YAv. ni-δāiti- ‘putting down, concealment’, Gk. θέσις ‘setting, placing, position, order’, Lat. fēti-ālis m. ‘one of the college of twenty priests of Rome’, Goth. ga-deþs ‘deed, action’, Lith. dė́tis f. ‘egg laying’, OCS blago-dětĭ ‘benefaction, charity, generosity’). Also noteworthy is an s-stem noun PIE *dh(e)h1-s- ‘that which is set up/placed’ (Anat.) > ‘[*statue of a] god’ (Gk., Arm., etc.) vel sim., with reflexes and derivatives found in several languages: *dheh1-s- (Arm. dikʻ pl. ‘gods’, ?Gk. θέσ-φατος adj. ‘spoken by a god’), *dhh1-s-ó- (PAnat. *dhh1‑s‑ó- > Lyc. A θθe- ‘block’, Lyd. tasa- ‘column (?)’; PGk. *thehó- > Myc. te-o = /thehos/, Gk. θεός ‘deity, god/goddess’), *dheh1-s-(i)i̯o- (OLat. fēsiae > Lat. fēriae f. pl. ‘festive days, religious festival’), *dhh1-s-no- (Lat. fānum n. ‘shrine, temple, consecrated place’), *dheh1-s-ne-h2- (Osc. fíísnú nom. sg. f. ‘temple’, Osc. fíísnam acc. sg. f. ‘id.’, Umbr. fesnafe acc. pl. f. ‘id.’), *dheh1-s-to- (Lat. fēstus adj. ‘festive, holiday’). For all these and other nominal formations based on PIE *dheh1-, cf. NIL:99–117 with further literature.

3.3Syntactic Reconstruction and Phraseology

The root PIE *dheh1- ‘to put, set, place; to do, make, produce’ forms part of several collocations. Cf., e.g., PIE *mén-s dheh1- ‘to put one’s mind on sth., memorize sth.’ (> PIIr. *mán-s dhaH- in YAv. part. pf. midd. mąs … daθāna-) alongside univerbated *mens=dheh1- ‘id.’ (OAv. mązdā- vb. ‘to memorize sth., remember sth.’); see, e.g., Schindler 1975b:266, Kölligan 2017a:63. Cf. also the syntagm PIE *k̑red(s) dheh1- ‘to trust’ in Ved. śrád dhā- ‘id.’ (RV+ [śráddhatta, śráddádhat]) beside univerbated śrad=dhā- vb. ‘id.’ (e.g., śrad-dádhāna-). Lat. crēdere vb. ‘to entrust, give credence’ and OIr. creitid, -creiti ‘to believe’, MW credu ‘to believe, trust’ are based on the same syntagm (cf. NIL:99, 418, 422f. n. 25, Hackstein 2012b:90–93 and s.v. PIE *k̑érd-/*k̑r̥d-´ n. ‘heart’). – Furthermore, univerbated syntagms with *dheh1- oftentimes gave rise to neo-roots ending in °dh(h1)-, for which cf. Schutzeichel 2014a and Kölligan 2017a with further lit. The latter adduces, e.g., the root PIE *u̯elH- ‘to be strong, have power’ (Lat. valēre ‘to be strong’, TochB walo ‘king’) alongside *u̯elHdh(h1)- ‘id.’, which is ultimately based on a syntagm PIE *u̯elH- dheh1-.
