1.1.3Meaning

On TL 6, Lyc. A hrppi corresponds to Gr. ἐπί in a prepositional construction (TL 6.2 Lyc, hrppi lada = TL 6.5 Gr. ἐπὶ ταῖς γυναιξίν ‘for the wives’), thus meaning ‘for’. The word also occurs as a preverb with the verbs la-(ti) and ta-(di), adding the sense ‘on (vel sim.)’. These analyses are secured and virtually consensual (thus in e.g. Deecke 1888b:268, Thomsen 1899a:12, Bugge 1901a:32, Meriggi 1936b:279, Pedersen 1945a:24, Laroche 1958b:179, Carruba 1964a:429 n. 3, van den Hout 1995b:115, Schürr 1996a:60, DLL:25, HEG S/1:857, Neumann 2007a:102f., EDHIL:729, Daues 2009a:57, Eichner 2017a:289, Oreshko 2020a:34, Christiansen 2020a:173).

1.1.4Stem

Lyc. A hrppi consists of the base element hr- (cf. hri ‘up, on (top)’) and a second sequence -pi. According to Carruba 1964a:429 n. 3, hrppi is equivalent to Hittite šēr=apa (loc. ptcl.). Another solution is to analyze hrppi as a Lycian univerbation of hr- and the adverb epi (with syncope); cf. ñtepi.
