1.1.3Meaning
The meaning ‘upper’ for Lyc. A hrzze/i- has been consensual since the 19th century (thus in e.g. Deecke 1887b:317, Thomsen 1899a:24, Pedersen 1945a:24, Laroche 1958b:53, Kronasser 1966a:53, Heubeck 1989a:48, Hajnal 1995a:183, Yoshida 2001a:84, Cau 2003b:52 n. 5, DLL:26, HEG S/1:885, Neumann 2007a:104, EDHIL:729, Schürr 2012c:9, Yakubovich 2013b:165). The function is equivalent to the directly cognate Hittite adjective šarazzi(ya)- ‘upper’.

1.1.4Stem
Lyc. A hrzze/i- is an i-mutating adjective formed with the suffix -ze/i- to a base hr-, which also underlies Lyc. A hri ‘up, on (top)’ and Lyc. A hrppi ‘for, on’. For the comparative suffix -ze/i-, cf. e.g. Lyc. przze/i- ‘foremost’ and the direct cognate Hitt. šarazzi(ya)-, which proves the Anatolian age of the formation (Laroche 1958b:108, Kronasser 1966a:53, Carruba 1978b:170, HEG S:885) and see below.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘upper’
The comparison between Hitt. šarāzzi(ya)- and Lyc. hrzze/i- calls for a reconstruction *sróti̯o- (thus EDHIL:264f., LIPP II:683, if not *srṓti̯o-, thus Kimball 1999a:135, 287, less likely *s(a)rā-ti̯ó- as in Hajnal 1995a:183). In Lycian, the accent must have been displaced and the middle vowel consequently syncopated.
