1. Individual Anatolian Languages

1.1 Lycian A

za-

‘share, allotment’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the trilingual inscription of the Letoon dated to 337 BCE (Wagner 2011a:156 with further literature) as well as in a decree that cannot yet be dated with absolute certainty.

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. N 320.14-15 (Xanthos)
nom./acc. coll. ẓạ TL 65.17 (Isinda)

1.1.3Meaning

In the trilingual inscription the word refers to Greek ἀγρόν ‘field’, which is part of the temene given by the city to the cult (not explicitly given in Laroche 1979c:66). Therefore, za- can be translated in this context as ‘allotment’ (Meriggi 1980a:325). Melchert 1994a:314 adds the meaning ‘portion, share’ from an etymological perspective (followed by Hajnal 1994a:143, Hajnal 1995a:154, DLL:87, Melchert 2018b ‘plot’). In TL 65.17, the collective formation za is the direct object of astti ‘to make (repeatedly)’ in a context pertaining to the political actions between Xeziga and the Lycian cities.

For a summary of outdated hypotheses, see Neumann 2007a:427f. Completely false (using outdated data) is the analysis by Gehrisch 2018a:117, 194 as a relative (or demonstrative) pronoun.

ca- (cak)

‘share, allotment (?)’

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in a metrical inscription that has not yet been dated accurately.

1.2.2Forms

nom./acc. coll. c̣a LW 44a.2 (Magnesia on Mt. Sipylos)

1.2.3Graphic Features

The reading follows Buckler 1924a:62, the upper part of the inscription is partly erased, which makes it impossible to verify the readings with any degree of certainty.

[D.S.]

1.2.4Meaning

No interpretation of cak had been suggested so far (Gusmani 1964a:88). Oscar Billing (pers. comm.) suggests separating the enclitic =k from the noun ca, which he proposes etymologically to connect to the factitive verb ca-(t) ‘to give a share, make a dedication’. Therefore, the Lyd. noun ca- c. would match Lyc. za- c. ‘share, allotment’ (also inflecting as a collective, see above). This interpretation allows for a better understanding of the syntax, especially since the word lawl, assumed here to be part of the same clause, is a genitival adjective in -l(i)- with the zero-ending for nominative plurals and neuter plurals/collectives, i.e. šatis=ụm c̣a=k trfnod lawl (LW 44a.2-3) ‘He trfnod to me the šatis and the lawl shares.’; see also under šat(i)-.

1.2.5Stem

For Lyd. ca-, we posit a common gender a-stem in analogy to the Lycian noun za- c.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘distribution, share’

Melchert (DLL:87) analyzes Lyc. za- c. ‘share, allotment’ as a verbal abstract noun in *-eh2- derived from the imperfective stem *dhh1-sk̑é/ó- attested in Hittite z(a)ške/a-(mi) ‘to keep placing, distribute’. From this action noun, a factitive stem would have been built, i.e. see Proto-Luwic *dhh1sk̑ā-(ti). This is followed by Sasseville 2021a:57, 62f., who further adds a Lydian noun *ca- ‘share’ to this (now considered attested, see above), together with the attested Lydian factitive ca-(t) ‘to give a share, make a dedication’. Therefore, a verbal abstract noun *dhh1sk̑ā- can be reconstructed for Proto-Luwic.
