zipsse-
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos, dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

The grammatical analysis is very tentative. A dative-locative plural is also possible (thus tentatively Melchert in DLL:137).

1.1.3Meaning
No meaning is suggested by Melchert (DLL:137), Schürr 2005a:156, Neumann 2007a:435. Meriggi 1936b:271 considers it a pronoun, but this fails to provide a satisfactory account of its contexts and morphology. Gehrisch 2018a:109 follows Meriggi, but does not incorporate the hypothesis into her translation. There is some agreement that zipsse is actually a compound made of zi and psse (Shevoroshkin 2002a:232, Schürr 2005a:156, Shevoroshkin 2014a:253), which would be supported by other compounds such asripsse. The analysis of the first member of the compound is more speculative; cf. Shevoroshkin 2002a:232 and Schürr 2005a:156 (comparing zireime/i-), Shevoroshkin 2002a:232 and Schürr 2016d:176 (comparing zirẽple/i-). As long as the meaning of *psse- is unknown, no solid meaning can be assigned to zipsse. An appurtenance to the noun za- c. ‘share, allotment’ would be the most straightforward hypothesis, though it cannot be proven based on the current state of research.
