cẽnši-(t)

‘to make a dedication (vel sim.)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in a metrical inscription that has not been dated accurately, although Euler & Sasseville 2019a:129 affirm that the use of the letter would speak for a 6th century dating.

1.1.3Meaning

Brandenstein 1931b:11 and Meriggi 1935a:103 n. 71 treat cẽnši- as a derivative of cẽni-(t) without any difference in the semantics and translate it as ‘to dedicate’ (tentatively followed by Gusmani 1964a:89, Sasseville 2021a:507 “to make a dedication”, pointing out the intransitivity). One should note that Yakubovich under lemma cẽni-(ti) prefers the meaning ‘to designate’, which is, as he remarks, compatible with the traditional meaning ‘to dedicate’. Vetter 1959a:36 was the first scholar to recognize that -idν is the marker of the 1st person singular preterit, which is now consensus (cf. Melchert 1994a:375, Gérard 2005a:101, Sasseville 2021a:506). For a recent translation of the passage, see Sasseville 2021a:507.
