1.1.4Meaning

The word tašūra refers to a place, where the kuwaniš ‘dogs’ are kept. In a comparative analysis with KUB 35.148 + KUB 7.57 iii 41, Sasseville & Yakubovich 2018a show that Palaic tašūra corresponds to Hitt. ḫarpi ‘kennel’ (from ḫarpa- ‘pile’ see Neu 1968a:162 n. 2). Therefore, the meaning ‘kennels’ is assigned for Pal. tašūra-. The meaning ‘sacrificial table/stand’ suggested by Eichner apud Melchert 1994a:191 does not suit the context and leaves unexplained the other places, where the animals are presented. No semantic assignment is offered in Carruba 1970a:73, Carruba 1972a:30.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

The word tašūra is analyzed convincingly by Melchert 2010b:58 as a formation in *-ro- derived from a u-stem, i.e. taš-u- (< *dheh1s-u- ← *dheh1-s-ó-) + -r(a)- (< *-ro-). A further derivation in *-eh2 is possible, although the exact stem class of the locative tašūra is still unknown due to the lack of attestations in other cases. A different possibility has been suggested in Melchert 2010b:58 n. 7, i.e. taš- (< *dheh1s-) + -ur- (< *-u̯r̥), which represents a verbal noun formation; cf. Hitt. aniūr ‘ritual’. What diminishes the credibility of the latter hypothesis is that the derivational base is not verbal, but rather nominal, whence a verbal noun in -ur- is not expected.

The base taš- (< *dheh1s-) has been etymologically connected with Luw. /tasa-/ n. ‘stele (?)’, Lyc. θθe- n. ‘stele, altar’ (vel sim.) and Lyd. tasa- c. ‘column, for which see under PAnat. *dheh1-s-ó-; cf. Watkins 2010a:138.
