1.1.3Meaning

In his comparison between the Lycian grave inscriptions and the Greek grave inscriptions from Lycia, Schmidt 1876a:19-23 equates rightly the Lycian phrase tike atlahi tibe kbijehi with Greek αὕτους ἢ ἑτέρους ‘any of his own or of someone else’s’. Thus, Lyc. kbi(je)- would equate Greek ἕτερος ‘one of the two’ or ἄλλος ‘other’ and mean ‘other, another’ (Meriggi 1936b:266f., Houwink ten Cate 1961a:71f., DLL:30, Neumann 2007a:160, Eichner 2017a:291 n. 121).

2.1Reconstruction

The Lycian adjective kbi(je)- belongs to adjectival stems in -i(je)- (< *-i̯o-), which have been i-mutated. It is clearly derived from the cardinal number 2, i.e. *du̯o- + -i̯o- → *du̯-ii̯o- >> Lyc. A kbi(je)-. The same formation *du̯-ii̯o- is found in the Cuneiform Luwian derivative duyanalli- ‘second-in-command’ (< *du-i̯o-n-é-lo-). The syllabification of the glide -- has been resolved in different ways; while the Lycian formation must reflect a shape *du̯-ii̯o-, the Luwian one must reflect *du-i̯o-. Therefore, there must have been a Proto-Luwic *du̯-ii̯o-/*du-i̯o-.
Contra Carruba 1979a:198, Eichner 1992a:60f., Melchert 1994a:308 et passim, Neumann 2007a:160 who assumes a Proto-Anatolian pre-form *du̯i-, which is not quite supported by the Anatolian material. Moreover, this leaves the form -kba in qñnãkba unexplained. Unclear Eichner 2017a:291 n. 121.
