1.1.3Meaning

The word kbijẽtezi modifies Huzetẽi, the husband of Xatm̃ma, who is buried with her. Since her first husband, i.e. the one who built the rock-carved tomb but was not buried in it, is named Ddepeñnewe, it is appropriate to translate sidi ehbi kbijẽtezei huzetẽi as ‘her second husband Huzetẽi’ (Gusmani 1994c). This is supported morphologically by the derivational base, i.e. kbijẽt(i)- ‘two’ → kbijẽt(i)- + -eze/i- ‘pertaining to the two’ = ‘second’. By comparing Luw. duyanalla/i- ‘of second rank’, Eichner 1993b:239 translates kbijẽtezi as ‘of second rank’, which gives an awkward attribute to a family title. Schürr 2014a:766 agrees to the etymological semantics of the word posited by Eichner, but sees an ethnicon in kbijẽteze/i- ‘of Tyinda’ (followed by DLL:31), which is not necessary, since the actual meaning is appropriate and even expected in the context of the inscription, where two ‘husbands’ in total are mentioned. Neumann 1975a:152 takes kbijẽtezi huzetẽi as a double name, which is far-fetched and not persuasive.
