1.1.3Meaning

The meaning ‘Ger. aufstellen lassen’ or ‘Eng. to cause to stand’ was elucidated by Bossert 1951b:177-180 using the passage of the attestation in SULTANHAN, §2 (cf. Laroche 1960c:49f.; Morpurgo Davies 1987a:213). The direct objects of the verb tanuwa-(i) are either steles, statues, gods or individuals (Morpurgo Davies 1987a:213).

[D.S.]

1.1.4Stem

This verb is derived from ta-(i) ‘to stand’ with the causative suffix /-nuwa-(i)/.

1.1.5Derivatives

  1. /tanussa-(i)/

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

The Luwian lexeme is a causative formation in /-nuwa-(i)/ derived from the verb /ta-(i)/ ‘to stand’ (Morpurgo Davies 1987a:213f., Oettinger 1992a:246 n. 65). Since the Luwian causative formation does not show a zero-grade of the root, one must conclude that the formation, if it existed in the proto-language, has been rebuilt based on the fixed stem /ta-(i)/ ‘to stand’. Therefore, /tanuwa-(i)/ is a young formation. The Hittite cognate tin(n)u-(mi) ‘to paralyze’ (HEG T,D: 374f.) contains the same verbal suffix but is derived from a different base, i.e. *tiye/a- < *sth2-i̯é/ó-.
