1.1.3Graphic Features

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The lexeme is spelt invariably with the logogram EXERCITUS (*269) covering most of the stem, and only the frequently following sign 〈la/i/u〉 (*445) and further syllabic signs provide hints as to its underlying phonological structure. Said hints point to reading the word along CLuw. lines, in which the derived word kwalanalli(ya)- ‘military (vel sim.)’ is attested in fully syllabic spelling (Poetto 1982b:102).

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

First elucidated by Poetto 1982b:102f., the semantic interpretation of this word is secure. It appears in several clear contexts in HLuw. and is further supported by the cognate CLuw. kwalanalli(ya)- ‘military (vel sim.)’ as well as Lyc. A telẽzije- n. ‘army’. Cf. also GKW doppelter Glossenkeilkulān(a)-.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

A neuter noun, the lexeme is formed from the verbal root /kwal-/ and the suffix /-an-/, which is used to form deverbal action and result nouns (Melchert 2007-2008a:182f.).
