1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Based on the noun /hantawatt(i)-/ ‘king’, the phonological interpretation of this lexeme is similarly secure despite lacking a direct cognate in CLuw. The adjectival suffix /-i(ya)-/, or its contracted remnant /i/, becomes obvious in only very few forms, viz. the nom./acc. sg. n. REX-ti-za, i.e. /hantawattin=za/ also showing the typical neuter particle /-sa, -za/, and the rhotacised abl./instr. REX-ti-ia-ri+i. In all other cases, the forms are the same as for the i-mutated noun.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The present lexeme is frequently found in the introductory clauses to inscriptions, where it is used in the detailed lineage of the author, typically in phrases such as ARSUZ 2, §1: EGO-mi IPURUS.FONS.MI HEROS wa/i-lá/í-si-ti-ni-za REGIO REX Ima-na-na REX FILIUS.NI-za, i.e. /ammu=mi Suppiluliumas hastallis falistinizzas wattani hantawattis Mananas hantawattis nimuwizzas/ ‘I am Suppiluliuma, the hero, king of the Falistinian region, son of the king Amanana’. The phrase /Mananas hantawattis nimuwizzas/ combines the noun /nimuwizzas/ ‘son’ with two modifiers in the shape of a genitive for the PN and an adjective for the title, signifying the possessive relationship of kinship in the most frequently used morphosyntactic coding (see Bauer 2014a:177-179).
Like the noun it is based on, the present adjective can also be found in the form MONS.REX in KULULU 8, l. 1, where it modifies the name of the mountain-god Sarruma in the phrase MONS.REX SARMA SERVUS, i.e. /watta-?hantawattis Sarrumas hudarlis/ ‘servant of the mountain-god Sarruma’.

1.1.5Stem
This adjective is derived from its nominal base /hantawatt(i)-/ ‘king’ by way of the suffix /-i(ya)-/, which forms adjectives of appurtenance (see e.g. Melchert 2003b:197).

xñtawati(je)-
‘pertaining to the king, royal’1.2.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in various grave inscriptions as well as on the inscribed pillar of Xanthos dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.2.3Meaning
The word xñtawatije is found in a series of adjectives in the dative plural. However, the head noun is either missing in the lacuna or has not yet been identified. Formally, it is an adjective formation in -i(je)- derived from the noun xñtawate/i- ‘king, ruler’, (→ xñtawati(je)- ‘pertaining to the king, royal’) (thus Melchert in DLL:84).

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘pertaining to the king’
The equation of Lyc. xñtawati(je)- ‘pertaining to the king, royal’ with HLuw. REX-ti- /hantawatti(ya)-/ ‘id.’ would allow the reconstruction of an adjective in *-i̯o- already for the Proto-Luwic stage, i.e. *Hantau̯ot-i̯o/i-. Since the adjectival suffix *-i̯o- is productive in both Luwian and Lycian, one cannot exclude that the derivative was built in each of the two languages independently from one another.
