1.1.3Meaning

Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1988a:173 analyze the verb /zarti-(ti)/ as a derivative of /zart-/ n. ‘heart’ and assign the meaning ‘to wish, contrive’ based on a contextual analysis (followed by Oettinger 2001b:458, Hawkins 2006a:29f., Payne 2012a:94 et passim). As a parallel for the obtained semantics of such a derivation, they adduce Gk. θυμός ‘soul, spirit’ → ἐπιθυμέω ‘to wish’. The verb /zarti-(ti)/ is often attested in curse formulas and its direct objects are either something evil or something that could be taken away from the author, which he would want to keep, e.g. ‘his name’ (SULTANHAN, §46).

1.1.4Stem

The verb /zarti-(ti)/ belongs to the verbal stems in /-i-(ti)/ with an unlenited ending (thus Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1988a:174). This is now made certain by the 3rd singular preterit form with the sign <ta>, which represents the fortis variant. Thus, a denominative in /-(a)i-(di)/ can be excluded.
