1.1.2Forms
| nom. sg. | /zartiyas/ | (COR)za+ra/i-ti-ia-sá | ALEPPO 3, §1 (Miscellaneous) |
The grammatical assignment is based on the interpretation of (COR)za+ra/i-ti-ia-sá as a lexeme different from /zart-/ n. ‘heart’; see discussion under meaning.

1.1.3Meaning
Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1988a:172f. assign /zartiyas/ to the lexeme /zart-/ ´heart´ and parse it as a genitive singular comparing Hitt. kardiyaš gen. sg. of kēr/kard- n. ‘heart’ (followed by Rieken 1999a:53f., EDHIL:469). It is in principle fine to assume an irregular genitive in this case, but there is otherwise no Luwian genitive ending in /-iyas/ attested. One should not misinterpret a stem in /-iya-/ c. (cf. nom. sg. (DEUS)ru-ti-ia-sá (MARAŞ 1, §6) beside gen. sg. (DEUS)CERVUS3-ia-sá (ŞIRZI, §1)), in which case the genitive ending is only /-as/. Therefore, instead of positing a hypothetical archaism, one may posit an abstract noun in /-a-/ c. derived from the verb /zarti-(ti)/ ‘to wish’, i.e. /zartiya-/ c. ‘wish’; cf. walli-(ti) ‘to raise’ → walliya- c. ‘rise, pride’. This depends on the analysis of the following sentence:
[ ... ]la+x-[n]ú?-na DOMINUS-ní-sa (COR)za+ra/i-ti-ia-sá | sá-ta (ALEPPO 3, §1)
According to Hawkins 2000a:563, we would have a genitive construction, i.e. ‘to be of the heart’ = ‘to want to do something’, and DOMINUS-ní-sa ‘lord’ is the subject of the verb. In our alternative solution, (COR)za+ra/i-ti-ia-sá is a nominative and DOMINUS-ní-sa is an adjective in /-i(ya)-/ ‘of the lord’, i.e. “It was the wish of the lord to do X.”. Furthermore, if the broken word […]la-x-[n]ú-na is an infinitive, this would bring support to our interpretation. Therefore, the latter option appears more probable.
