This lexeme is found in the dedicatory inscription N 324, the sepulchral inscriptions TL 128 and TL 135, as well as in N 320, the Letoon trilingual inscription, most commonly dated to 337 BCE, the first year of the Achaemenid king Arses, during the reign of the Carian satrap Pixodaros (Badian 1977a:49f, Bryce 1986a:48f, Keen 1998a:10, Wagner 2011a:156).

1.1.3Meaning

The meaning of Lyc. A arawa- is extractable from the Letoon trilingual (N 320). The sentence on lines 20-22 concerns the payment of slaves to be released, containing with the clause xddazas : epi=de : arawa : hãti km̃mẽtis, lit. ‘the slaves who they let back into freedom’ (cf. Laroche 1979c:69f.). On line 12, Lyc. A arawã corresponds to Gk. ἀτέλειαν ‘tax exemption’ (cf. Laroche 1979c:66). It is thus possible to extract a general meaning ‘freedom’ (thus in e.g. Carruba 1977a:296, Starke 1990a:183, DLL:4, Kloekhorst 2006a:101, Neumann 2007a:18, Schürr 2010c:196, Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:304), either from tax or slavery. The use in an apodosis formula in the sepulchral inscriptions TL 128 and TL 135 also indicate that arawa- may denote freedom from punishment (Christiansen 2009a:49).

1.1.4Stem

Lyc. A arawa- is a common gender a-stem with abstract meaning, formed to an adjectival base derived with the suffix *-u̯o- found in Hitt. arawa- ‘free’ (DLL:4, Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:304, contra the outdated analysis as a neuter stem in Neumann 2007a:18).
