1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably certain, given that it belongs to the family around HLuw. /hatta-/ ‘to ruin’, which is cognate with CLuw. ḫattalla- ‘club, mace’.

All attested spellings involve the logogram *274, mostly as a determinative, but sometimes representing part of the phonological form of the word. The sign lacks a semantic interpretation as of yet, but it is also used with the noun /ubadid-/ ‘demesne’ as well as the phonologically largely unclear words for ‘booty’ and ‘to loot’, indicating that it occurs with words from the domain of possession.Perhaps a designation as OCCUPARE, POSSIDERE vel sim. could be considered.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this verb is assigned on a solid basis consisting of the etymological link with /hatta-/ ‘to ruin’, the contexts of attestation, and the fact that it occurs several times in the KARATEPE 1 bilingual text where it translates Phoenician ʿn ‘to subdue, defeat’ (Bossert 1950a:15, followed by HHG:55 and Laroche 1960c:144).Note that Bossert 1950a:29-32 draws a number of erroneous conclusions when adducing Hittite katteraḫḫ- ‘to subdue’ as a cognate for /hattall(a)i-/, which is phonologically impossible. The meaning can be seen e.g. in MARAŞ 4, §2: a-wa/i hi-ri+ika˺-na(URBS) ˹kwa/i˺-[a]-ti-i (“[ANNUS]”)[u-si]-i ˹(*274)˺[ha]-ta-li-i-ha, approx. /a=wa Hirikkan kwatti ussi hattalliha/, meaning ‘In which year I smote/subdued the town Hirikka, (in that year I set up the storm-god Tarhunt of the Demesne)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:256).

1.1.5Stem

A denominative, this verb belongs to the class in /-(a)i-(di)/. Its derivational base appears to be an unattested */hattalla(/i)-/, clearly cognate with CLuw. ḫattalla- ‘club, mace’ deriving from CLuw. *ḫatt- ‘to pierce’ (Sasseville 2021a:230f., CLL:63f.); cf. also the discussion among various scholars as summarised by Sasseville.
