1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this verb is mainly unclear. It appears to end in /°sa-/, in which the choice of 〈sà〉 over any of the other SA signs may point to a palatalised sibilant /ʃ/, but the graphemic distribution is no longer reliable in the 8th century BCE, see Rieken 2010b:658f. On the basis of the suggested meaning, a link to saru(ssa)- ‘loot, plunder’ may be considered (L. Preß, pers. comm.).

The logogram *274 can be found in the spelling of a number of HLuw. words, e.g. /hattall(a)i-(di)/ ‘to smite, subdue’ and /ubadid-/ ‘demesne’, see Hawkins 2000a:257 and Yakubovich 2019a:545f.

1.1.4Meaning

With only one attestation known so far, the suggested meaning is to be understood as provisional. However, Yakubovich 2019a:545f. makes a case for interpreting it as ‘to loot’ based on the context as well as the spelling with *274. TOPADA, §19 reads: a-mi-sa-há-wa/i5-tú-tax REX+RA/I-sa7 EQUUS(ANIMA)-sa4 FRONS-ti-ia-sí?-sa FRONS-ti-sa7 ANNUS-na 2-za/i “TERRA”-kwa/i+ra/i a-tax ta-x(URBS) *274(-)sà-tax, approx. /ammis=ha=wa=du=tta hantawattis azzus hantiyassis hantis ussin tuwinzi taskwarri anta Ta-… …-(s)saTa/, translating perhaps as ‘(I succeeded in battle.) Also, my royal horse, the first of the first, looted in the land the city Ta… in year two / for two years (?)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:453, 457).

1.1.5Stem

Largely unclear. The spelling may indicate a stem in /-ssa-(i)/, i.e. an imperfective stem, cf. Sasseville 2021a:489f.
