2.1Reconstruction ‘to live, life’
Comparing the Hittite root ḫuit-, CLuw. ḫuit- and Lyc. B qet- and qid-, a Proto-Anatolian root with the shape *Hu̯ed- ‘to live, life’ (with *h2 or *h3) must be reconstructed (thus with Melchert 1994a:262, 273, Rieken 1999a:304-306). Contra EDHIL:355-356, the reconstruction of a diphthong *Hu̯ei̯d- is not permitted by the Lycian B cognate with qetbeleime/i- with the root vocalism -e-. As pointed out by Melchert (ibid.), the common Anatolian change of *e > i between w_dental is sporadic, as can be seen from Lycian B qid- in qidridi beside qet- in qetbeleime/i-. The reconstruction of a final voice *d (or *dh) in the root is supported by the single spelling in the cuneiform script and the -d- in the Lycian alphabet. The -t- in qetbeleime/i- originates in the sequence *-du̯- in Pre-Lycian *qed-wele/i-, which develops to Lyc. B -tb- (for the rule see Melchert 1994a:302). For a summary of outdated hypotheses, see HEG A-H:269-271. No root verb or root noun is attested for Anatolian *Hu̯ed-, but only derivatives. For the Proto-Anatolian heteroclitic, see PAnat. *Hu̯ed-r̥/n-.
