‘to hunt (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found on the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE., and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning

The verbal form qidridi is related to the base *qidr- ‘animal’ equating CLuw. ḫūitar (Hajnal 1995a:151 followed by Shevoroshkin 2012a:473). Shevoroshkin (ibid.) suggests the meaning ‘to dash’, which is semantically hard to obtain from a denominal verb to a derivational base denoting ‘(wild) animals’. Sasseville 2021a:239f. compares other Indo-European derivatives such as θήρ ‘wild beast’ → θηράω ‘to hunt’, Skt. mṛgá- ‘wild beast’ → mṛgáya- ‘to hunt’ and suggests the meaning ‘to hunt’ for Lyc. B qidridi. Contextually speaking, this would be an appropriate action for the Lycian king Gergis to perform during a military campaign.

kibe=uwe=neu psseje qidridi laxadi zirẽple (TL 44c.58-58)

‘Or does he not yet hunt for the psseje zirẽple during a military campaign?’

Therefore, the meaning ‘to hunt’ is adopted for Lycian B qidridi. For outdated hypotheses see DLL:127 with further literature.

1.1.4Stem

Hajnal 1995a:151 and Sasseville 2021a:239f. take qidridi to be a denominative verb in -(e)i-(di), i.e. qidr(e)i-(di).

[D.S.]

For the derivational base see Lyc. B *qidr-.
