1.1.2Forms

abl./instr. ḫu-i-tum-na-a-ḫi-ta-ti KUB 35.21 rev. 14 (CTH 761, MS)
  ḫu-i-tum-na-[a-ḫi-ta-ti] KUB 32.12, 5’ (CTH 761, MS)
  ḫu-i-tum-na-a-ḫi-ta-[ti] KBo 9.143 iii! 15’ (CTH 763, MS)

  [ḫu-i-tum-ma-n]a-ḫa!-ti KUB 35.48 ii 2’ (CTH 760, NS)
  ḫu-u-⟨i-⟩tu4-um-na-ḫi-ta-ti KUB 32.8 (+) 5 iv 16’ (CTH 759, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The mistaken spelling -ḫa!-ti at KUB 35.48 ii 2’ can safely be corrected to -ḫi!-ta!-ti according to the parallels. – Given the abundance of spelling mistakes found in KUB 32.8 (+) 5, missing -i- ibid. iv 16’ should be restored. The alternative explanation that /ui/ developed into /u/ (for the sporadic sound change see Simon 2016f) is excluded, because in the Proto-Luwian period ḫuid- had already changed to *Hu̯id- thus eliminating the relevant sequence /ui/ (see EDHIL:836-839 on the labialization of /ḫ/).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Although the full spelling with -tum-ma-na- occurs only once, it confirms the assumption that the cluster rendered is /mmn/ with a geminate bilabial nasal.

1.1.4Meaning

The word is always paired with the expression for the favor of the gods within lists of blessings asked for by the ritualist. More precisely, the obvious derivation from ḫuitumar/-m(ma)n- or *ḫuidum(ma)n- ‘life’ with the abstract suffix -aḫi(t)- points to a meaning in the semantic area of ‘life, vitality, liveliness’; thus already Meriggi 1957a:68 (‘vita’), but cf. also DLL:47 (‘vitalité’), Starke 1990a:163 (‘Leben’), CLL:84 and EDHIL:355 (‘vitality, liveliness’), HED Ḫ:352-355 and Ünal 2007a:224 (‘vitality’), HEG A-K:269-271 (‘Leben, Lebewesen’ o.ä.) and Tischler 2008a:58 (‘Lebenskraft?’). Outdated Otten 1953a:85.

1.1.5Stem

The assignment of ḫuitum(ma)naḫi(t)- to the stem class of abstract nouns in -aḫi(t)- needs no further comment. Obviously, it is derived from an oblique stem *ḫuitum(ma)n-, which can in principle belong to an unattested n-stem with -m(ma)n- suffix throughout (thus Starke 1990a:163) or to a heteroclitic ḫuitumar as advocated in DLL:47, Carruba 1966a:18, Melchert 1983a:17 n.27, HEG A-K:270, HED H:354.
