qidrasa-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found on the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE., and stylistically to around 400 BCE. (Borchhardt et al. 1997-99a:19f.).

  qi[d]rasa!di TL 44d.18 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Shevoroshkin (apud Neumann 2007a:302) interprets the sequence qi[d]rasdditiu (TL 44d.18) as qi[d]rasa!di tiu, which is followed here (contra Hajnal 1995a:158 n. 166 and DLL:126, who read qi[d]ras dditiu). For the word tiu emended here to ti<j>u, see under tija- c. ‘penalty’. The word xidrasadi (TL 44d.70) is related by Melchert (DLL:135) to the base *qidr-, which is contextually attractive, and the letter x is emended to q in Sasseville 2018a:309 n. 22; as a result, no base *xidr- would exist (contra Shevoroshkin 2002a:230, Neumann 2007a:123).

1.1.4Meaning

The noun qidrasa- is a formation in -asa- derived from the base *qidr- ‘(wild) animal’. According to the analysis of Sasseville 2018a:309, the suffix -asa- is used to “individualize” an adjectival formation in -ase/i- (or -ese/i-). Thus, qidrasa- c. might reflect the substantivization of a non-attested *qidrase/i- ‘of the animals’. The outcome of a derivation in -a- would be *qidrase/i- + -a-, i.e. qidrasa-, ‘the one of the animals’. This may refer to an animal deity or personification of wildlife (cf. xbadasa- c. in Sasseville 2018a:309f.). The two contexts in which the two ablative-instrumentals qidrasadi are attested are still too obscure to verify this approach. Until further evidence has surfaced, no semantic assignment can be given to Lyc. B qidrasa- c.

For the derivational base, see Lyc. B *qidr-.
