1.1.3Meaning
The widely accepted translation of
ḫuiduwaluwara as ‘during (his) lifetime’ is based on Otten’s (Otten 1953a:86) equation of its cognate
ḫuiduwalaḫi(t)- with Hitt. TI-tar ‘life’ and the conducive context at KBo 5.9 i 12’-14’: A-BU-KA-mu ku-it [tu]-˹el˺ [ŠU]M-an
ḫu-u-i-du-u-wa-lu-wa-ra pé-ra-an me-mi-iš-k[e-e]t [n]u-ut-ta a-pád-da-an EGIR-an ša-an-aḫ-ḫu-un “Because your father had spoken your name before me during his lifetime(?), I therefore took care of you.” (transl. Beckman 1996a:55); cf. already DLL:47 (‘du vivant ?’), followed in Starke 1990a:543f., CLL:85, HHw:58, Ünal 2007a:224, EDHIL:355, HW2 Ḫ: 682, Wilhelm & Fuscagni 2013a.
Differently, HED H:355 (acc. sg. ‘... and mode of living’) and Lebrun 1992a:543f. (‘mode de vie’). However, the putative coordination of the preceding noun and
ḫuiduwaluwar would demand geminating –a ‘and’, which is evidently lacking. Friedrich 1926a:30.

1.1.4Stem
Starke 1990a:543 was the first to offer a plausible analysis of the derivational process. According to him, the underlying stem is a verbal noun in -war, derived from a reconstructed verb *ḫuiduwali(ya)- ‘to be alive’, which in turn is built from the well-attested adjective ḫuiduwal(i)- ‘alive’. For the regular elimination of the verbal suffix -i(ya)- before -war, see Starke 1990a:532.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Origin
The Luwian origin of
ḫuiduwaluwara was recognized as early as 1922 by Forrer 1922a:215f. and is generally accepted, e.g. in Sommer 1932a:50 n. 4, CLL:85, Starke 1990a: 543f., Melchert 2005a:450, van den Hout 2007a:239.
