1. Individual Anatolian Languages
1.1 Lycian A
hriqla-
‘high precinct’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested once in the trilingual of the Letoon dated to 337 BCE., but see also Lyc. B zriqala-.
[D.S.]
1.1.2Forms
| nom. sg. | hriqla | N 320.41 (Xanthos) |
1.1.3Graphic Features
Gusmani 2010a:70 segregates the sequence mehriqla in mehri qla instead of me hriqla, which is not persuasive especially considering the Lyc. B cognate zriqala-.
[D.S.]
1.1.4Meaning ‘the precinct of the acropolis, acropolis’
Laroche 1979c:85, 115 suggests that the hriqla- meaning literally “high precinct” is a precinct of more prominence than the simple qla- thus referring probably to the precinct on the acropolis of Xanthos. This is confirmed by the Aramean version, which translates hriqla- with b-’wrn byrl’ ‘the citadel of Xanthos’. The popular comparison with Lyd. šerliš šrmliš ‘the chief of the temenos’ is not adequate, although the concept of authority is present in both cases. The high precinct of the acropolis of Xanthos surely had authority over the Letoon just as the “chief of the temenos” had authority over the Artemision of Sardis; cf. Eichner 1986b:205 n. 5, Neumann 2007a:100, Gusmani 2010a:70 with further literature.

1.2 Lycian B
zriqala-
‘the precinct of the acropolis’1.2.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested on the inscribed pillar of Xanthos dated shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE.

1.2.2Forms
| dat./loc. sg. | zriqali | TL 44d.32 (Xanthos) |
| zriq!ali | TL 44c.50-51 (Xanthos) |
Contra Schürr 2016d:176, who parses zriqali as nominative singular. The clear appurtenance of qala-/qla- to the a-stems does not support his claim.
[D.S.]
1.2.3Graphic Features
The attestation of TL 44c.50-51 is written as zrigali, which should be emended after the other attestation zriqali. This is also supported from a phonological point of view, because no Lycian words can begin with g-, which comes from a Proto-Anatolian lenited laryngeal.
[D.S.]
1.2.4Meaning
Gusmani 1989-1990a:76 suggests tentatively an equation with Lyc. A hriqla- ‘precinct of the acropolis’ (hesitantly followed by Serangeli 2015b:168 n. 8 and Schürr 2016d:176). This semantic assignment can be supported contextually, because the zriqali designate a place, where an invocation of the gods is made (TL 44c.50-51) and where something should be delivered (TL 44d.32). Shevoroshkin 2014a:239 interprets the second member qali as ‘fighter’ based on an etymological comparison with Hitt. ḫulle/a-(mi) ‘to fight’. However, this is not supported from a broader Lycian perspective.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘high precinct’
The equation of Lyc. A hriqla- and Lyc. B zriqala- allows us to reconstruct a Proto-Lycian compound *sri-ku̯olā- ‘high precinct’.
