1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, because its cognate links with the other Anatolian languages are not clear. It is possible, but not provable at present, that CLuw. marušamma/i- ‘dark blue’ and CLuw. marwāi(ya)- ‘dark’ are related (Hawkins 2000a:136, cf. CLL:141f., HED M:89-91, HEG L-M:150f.). Since the spelling at KARKAMIŠ A24a2+3, §7 employs 〈sà〉, it is likely that the sound rendered is a /ʃ/, palatalised because of the preceding /u/, see Rieken 2010b:659.
The logogram FLAMMAE (sign *477) is used with a host of words around fire, such as /kinu(wa)-(i)/ ‘to burn up’ and /luzzall(i)-/ ‘holocaust, fire sacrifice’.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of this word is assigned based on the context and spelling. Since the logogram FLAMMAE is found with words relating to fire, it is reasonable to assume a similar meaning for /marusana(/i)-/, see Hawkins 2000a:136, who suggests ‘firebrand’. The only context at KARKAMIŠ A24a2+3, §7 reads: a-wa/i a-sú+ra/i(REGIO)-ia-na-´(URBS) (FLAMMAE?)ma-ru-sà-na-ti-i (ARMA)hu-ta-li-i-ta-a, approx. /a=wa Asuriyan marusanadi huttallitta/, probably translating as ‘He smote Assyria with a firebolt (?)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:135 and Yakubovich 2019a:545).

1.1.5Stem
The morphology of this word is partly opaque due to the lack of assured cognates. Moreover, its grammatical gender does not become clear from the attestation, nor can i-mutation be ruled out. If it should be related to CLuw. marušamma/i-, it would be built from an otherwise unattested stem */marus-/ with the addition of the suffix /-ana(/i)-/, which can be used to build nouns; see Melchert 2003b:195.
