erawazije-

‘memorial’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested on various inscriptions found across Lycia, with several instances on TL 44, the inscription on the pillar of Xanthos. The pillar is dated stylistically to around 400 BCE and contextually to shortly after the ascension of the Persian emperor Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning

On TL 117, ebeija erawazija corresponds to τò μνῆμα τóδ´ in the adjoining Greek inscription. Thus, erawazije- should be equated to Gr. μνῆμα (Neumann 1961a:52), accordingly meaning something like ‘memorial’ (similarly also Pedersen 1945a:35, Oettinger 1979a:345 n. 171, HEG A-K:73, Melchert 1992b:49, Hajnal 1995a:105, DLL:4, Kloekhorst 2006a:101, Neumann 2007a:19, Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:305 n.5).

1.1.4Stem

From the plural ending -a we can deduce that erawazije- is most likely a neuter gender e-stem. The stem is formed with the suffix -ije- to a base *erawazi-. However, a collective formation from a common gender noun cannot technically be excluded.

Several derivational bases have been proposed for erawazije-. Among the most common proposed comparanda are Hitt. aruwā(i)-(mi) ‘to show reverence’ (Neumann 1961a:52, HEG A-K:73), Lyc. arawa- ‘freedom’ (Melchert 1992b:49, Hajnal 1995a:105f., Kloekhorst 2006a:101) and Luw. aru- ‘high’ (DLL:4). The association of HLuw. /aruwaru(wa)-(i)/ ‘to erect (?)’ and Lyc. eruwe-(ti) ‘to raise’ to buildings could render the latter derivation most probable.

Neumann 1961a:52 segments the lexeme as erawa-zi- and compares the suffix -zi- to the one in other words for built objects, such as isbazije- and teze/i-.
