1.1 Lycian A

tus-(ti)

‘to repeatedly place (vertically), uphold (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is only securely attested twice in texts from Xanthos.

1.1.2Forms

3pl. pres. act. tusñti TL 44a.12 (Xanthos)
    TL 45b.11 (Xanthos)

Note that Schürr 2005a:151 restores [tusñt]i on TL 45b.5. While the restored letters would conceivably fit the lacuna, the fact that the restoration is based on only one letter renders it too uncertain to be included as a properly attested form.

1.1.3Meaning

The meaning of tus-(ti) is not easily determined independently within Lycian A, since the contexts of both attestations are fragmentary and without any legible object. However, an iterative verb built on tuwe-(ti) ‘to place (vertically), establish’ is plausible from a morphological perspective (thus Shevoroshkin 1979a:92f, DLL:74, Neumann 2007a:392, Serangeli 2018a:319, Sasseville 2021a:456). This notion is further supported by the identical corresponding verb in Lycian B being preceded by tbisu ‘twice’. Note that the meaning cannot be distributive, as tuwe-(ti) may take plural objects. The sense of tus-(ti) must consequently be iterative (Sasseville 2021a:456).

While the base Lyc. A tuwe-(ti) may have an abstract meaning, e.g. ‘to establish (of laws)’, this cannot be securely posited for tus-(ti). Schürr 2005a:151 makes substantial restorations of TL 45b in which [tusñt]i is postulated with a direct object mara ebeija ‘these laws’. If this restoration is correct (on which see Forms), tus-(ti) would have an additional sense ‘to uphold (vel sim.)’ (per Schürr ‘einhalten’), forming an imperfective sense to ‘to establish’. On account of the insecure restoration of [tusñt]i, this cannot be considered certain, however.

The meaning ‘twelve’ assigned to tusñti by Laroche 1974b:146 n. 41 is outdated, see Shevoroshkin 1979a:92f.

1.1.4Stem

Lyc. tus-(ti) is an iterative s-stem formation built to the base tuwe-(ti) ‘to place (vertically), establish’.

1.2 Lycian B

tus-(ti)

‘to repeatedly place (vertically)’

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is a hapax attested on the Xanthos stele.

[O.B.]

1.2.2Forms

3sg. pres. act. tustti TL 44d.21 (Xanthos)

1.2.3Meaning

See Meaning under the corresponding Lycian A lemma. The iterative reading is substantiated by the preceding adverb tbisu ‘twice’ (Sasseville 2021a:456). The direct object is not legible, however.
