1.1 Lycian A

as-(ti)

‘to make (imperf.)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos (TL 44), dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.). It is also attested in the trilingual inscription of the Letoon (N 320) dated to 337 BCE (Wagner 2011a:156 with further literature) as well as in a grave inscription containing a long biography (TL 29), which can be dated to shortly after the beginning of the reign of Alexander the Great.

For the reading of TL 29.3, which was previously read as astti, see Tekoğlu 2006a:1705. For the identification of sejesttebeli (TL 44b.2) as containing a form of astte, see Eichner 2005a:24 n. 128 (partially suggested in DLL:6).

1.1.4Meaning

Carruba 1980a:290 elucidates the Lycian verb as-(ti) as an imperfective s-formation derived from the verb a(i)-(di) ‘to do, make’ (followed by Neumann 1998b:218, Melchert (DLL:6), Cau 2003b:54 n. 12, Gusmani 2010a:69, Serangeli 2018a:321f., Sasseville 2021a:451-453; hesitant Lebrun 1990a:169 n. 17). On its use in N 320 translated as ‘to carry out’, see Neumann 1998b:218, Melchert 1999c, Gusmani 2010a. In TL 44b.2, Eichner 2005a:23f. translates ‘to achieve’ (contra Gehrisch 2018a:69, who still sees a form of the verb ‘to be’, which is phonologically impossible.) On the context of TL 29 and the meaning ‘to restore’, see Sasseville 2021a:452f. (differently Gehrisch 2018a:39).

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.2.2Forms

1sg. pret. act. asxxa TL 44d.27 (Xanthos)
  asx[xa] TL 44d.43-44 (Xanthos)

The grammatical interpretation goes back to Meriggi 1936a:275 (followed by Melchert in DLL:113), Gehrisch 2018a:91, Sasseville 2021a:451, partly by Schürr 2018b:65, contra Shevoroshkin 2012a:466).

[D.S.]

1.2.3Graphic Features

Contra Hajnal 1995a:55, who takes prijasxxa as one lexeme, whereas Schürr 2018b:76, 80 sees a substantive sxxa in a compound prija-sxxa. This segment is instead made up of the preverb pri and the verbal form asxxa. For the restoration of the beginning of the line TL 44d.44, cf. Shevoroshkin apud Neumann 2007a:28, Schürr 2018b:60, Gehrisch 2018a:89.

[D.S.]

1.2.4Meaning

The identification of the word asxxa as a 1sg. pret. form of the imperfective s-formation of a(i)-(di) ‘to do, make’ Melchert (DLL:113), which is taken over by Gehrisch 2018a:91, Schürr 2018b:65, Sasseville 2021a:451. Both contexts in which asxxa is found are obscure. The direct object of the verb in TL 44d.44-45 is probably muwa ‘strength’, although it is not entirely clear what the clause would refer to. The attestation in TL 44d.27 occurs with the preverb pri, which should modify the semantics, and the direct object might be ?; however, the entire passage deserves more research. Therefore, the translation of Lyc. B as-(ti) is dependent on the equation with Lycian A as-(ti).
