1.1.3Meaning

The Lycian word telẽzije- n. occurs regularly in military contexts and represents something that can be defeated in battle (TL 104b). Furthermore, it can modify the word for ‘precinct’ (TL 40c, TL 44b.13, TL 44c.12), i.e. telẽzijehi qla ‘the precinct of the telẽzije-’, which means that the telẽzije- can have its own precinct. van den Hout 1995c argues that telẽzije- means ‘headquarters’ (followed by DLL:62), although this is not supported by TL 104b., where Artumpara  and his telẽzijẽ are defeated by Perikles. One does not defeat headquarters, but rather the ‘army’. Likewise, telẽzijehi qla would make better sense, if it referred to the ‘precinct of the army’ or in other words ‘military precinct’, where the troops are stationed, rather than to the “the precinct of the headquarters”. Therefore, the Lycian word telẽzije- is better translated as ‘army’ (thus already Deecke 1887b:337 (Deecke (ibid.) suggests that it refers specifically to the foot-soldiers, which cannot be proven based on the current data) and Meriggi 1978c:252).

For a summary of the various translations found across the literature see Neumann 2007a:345. Schürr 2012b argues that telẽzije- refers to a title. This is not persuasive neither contextually nor morphologically: a neuter agent noun in -ije- n. would be quite unexpected. The comparison with xudalijẽ (PN) (TL 54) adduced by Schürr 2012b:39 is not valid, because the personal name is an n-stem as the genitive form xudalijẽh clearly shows, while telẽzije- is a thematic stem.
