1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian
/parni(ya)-/, DOMUS-ní-
‘domestic’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested six times in inscriptions from Tabal, Commagene, and Malatya, dating from the 12th to the 8th century BCE.
[A.P.]
1.1.2Forms
| dat./loc. sg. | /parni/ | DOMUS-ní-i(a) | KARAHÖYÜK, § 22 (Malatya) |
| acc. pl. c. | /parninzi/ | DOMUS-zi/a | KARAHÖYÜK, § 13 (Malatya) |
| DOMUS-zi/a | KARAHÖYÜK, § 9 (Malatya) |
Besides the occurrences as a simplex listed above, the HLuw. corpus holds a handful of compound attestations:
| nom. sg. c. | /…/ | DOMUS-ni-DOMINUS-ni-i-sa4 | KULULU 4, §8 (Tabal) |
| DOMUS[-ni-]DOMINUS-ni-sá-’ | KULULU 5, §2 (Tabal) | ||
| DOMUS-ni-NEPOS-mi-i-ni-sá | BOYBEYPINARI 1, §11 (Commagene) |
Presumably, these represent /parni-nannis/ ‘dominus, master of the house’ and a version of what appears to be ‘grandson / descendant of the house’ respectively.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably certain despite a lack of fully syllabic spellings, provided the contexts of attestation are correctly analysed, cf. the discussion of the meaning below. Use of the logogram DOMUS (sign *247) ties the word to the noun HLuw. /parn(a)-/ ‘house’, and the syllabic signs used strongly point to a stem in /-i(ya)-/.
[AH.B.] [A.P.]
1.1.4Meaning
The meaning is assigned mainly on the basis of the morphology, but finds support in the contexts of attestation. Thus the protasis of the curse formula at KARAHÖYÜK, §9 runs: POCULUM.PES.*67(REGIO) SUPER DOMUS-zi/a VIR2.URBS+MI-zi/a i(a)-zi/a, approx. /… sarra parninzi …-ninzi izzida/, meaning ‘He improved the domestic camps in the land …’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:290).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The adjective appears to derive from the noun /parn(a)-/ ‘house’ by way of the frequently used suffix /-i(ya)-/, building an adjective of appurtenance, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197.
