1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this noun is provisional and depends on whether the possible etymological link with HLuw. /haratta-/ ‘(matter of) prosecution’ is correct, and thus also with CLuw. ḫarātar-/-tn- ‘(matter of) concern, prosecution’. In the only attestation known to date, this word is preceded by the logographic determinative MALUS (sign *368), which ties it graphically to the words around HLuw. /attuwal(i)-/ ‘evil’.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of this word is determined based on three criteria: the spelling with MALUS, the likely etymological connection with /haratta-/ ‘(matter of) prosecution’, and the context of attestation, cf. Hawkins 2000a:177.Earlier, Laroche 1960c:195 had deemed the meaning unknown, and Meriggi 1975a:131 cautiously translated it as ‘enemy’ (“il nemico”). In KARKAMIŠ A17b, §5 represents the apodosis of a curse formula, indicating that /harattutta-/ must denote something undesirable that works as a punishment: […] za-[…] LITUUS+na-mi-sa (DEUS)TONITRUS-hu-za-sa (“MALUS”)ha+ra/i-tú-tá VERSUS-wa/i-na PUGNUS-˹ri+i?˺-tú, approx. /… za-… m(a)nammis Tarhunzas harattutta tawiyan arittu/, meaning ‘(He who does not honour him), … th[is] seeing (Storm-god) Tarhunt will raise afflictions against [him]’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:176).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
This neuter gender noun (or plurale tantum) appears to be built from an unattested u-stem base */harattu-/ with the nominal suffix /-tta(/i)-/ (cf. Melchert 2003b:196).
