Contra Gusmani 1962a:165 with n. 23, ebide is to be understood not as a preverb but as ebi=de with the disjunction ‘or’ and the “locative” particle =de.

1.1.3Meaning
The word ebi has long been lumped together with ebei ‘here’ and considered a graphic or phonetic variant of the latter (cf. Laroche 1960a:18, Houwink ten Cate 1961a:67 “ebei dat. sg. / ebi = loc. sg.”, Laroche 1979c:75, Neumann 2007a:48f., but Carruba 1977a:314 “nom/acc. sg. or pl. n.”). Melchert (DLL:12), however, recognizes that it represents the disjunction ‘or’ and, when combined with the negative ne, ‘nor’ (followed by Hajnal 1995a:138, Gehrisch 2018a:190 (but cf. on page 101), Christiansen 2020a:255). It is worth noting that ebi can occur together with the other disjunction tibe ‘or’.

1.1.4Stem
Hajnal 1995a:138 interprets the disjunction ebi ‘or’ as a grammaticalized frozen case of the original locative form of the denominative pronoun ebe-.
