pabra-(ti)

‘to commission’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning

The verb occurs in a military context in which the governor of Kaunos “pabrati”-s the Lycian king to go and defeat certain political opponents. On contextual grounds, Melchert (DLL:47) suggests ‘to command, order, urge (?)’ (likewise Neumann 2007a:255; cf. Schürr 1998a:152). This semantic assignment is further defended by Serangeli 2019a:230, Sasseville 2021a:48f. and Sasseville 2021c. For a list of outdated literature, see Neumann 2007a:255.

1.1.4Stem

The nominal stem class in -a-(ti) speaks for a reduplicated factitive verb, which could be supported from the Cuneiform Luwian perspective (see Sasseville 2021a:30, 48f.), i.e. Lyc. *para-(ti) matching CLuw. para-(ti) ‘to carry (off)’. If correct, CLuw. papra-(i) is rather attributed to the ḫi-conjugation, thus a stem formation different from the Lycian one in pabra-(ti).

1.2.3Meaning

The verb pubrati refers to an action performed by the Lycian king Gergis in various precincts, which the deity Antaliya will favor (for the context, see Sasseville 2021d). Schürr 2016d:168 and Sasseville 2021a:48f. equates it to Lyc. A pabrati (contra Shevoroshkin 2002a:230). As pointed out by Sasseville 2021a:48f. n. 31, the coloring of the vowel from -a- to -u- adjacent to a labial -b- is perfectly fine. Another example of this coloring effect is suggested for tubur(i)- (see Sasseville 2021d). The comparison of Shevoroshkin 1971a:208 with Hitt. papraḫḫ-(i) ‘to defile’ (similarly Gehrisch 2018a:83) would be phonologically and morphologically in order, but semantically inadequate.
