1.1.4Meaning

Most of the contexts of para-(ti) are uninformative, but as Melchert 2016a:204 points out, in KUB 35.43 ii 10-14 “[t]he context is that of a scape animal, which is to take and remove evil from the ritual client.” Melchert connects the transitive verb para-(ti) that denotes the action of removal, as well as its reduplicated variant CLuw.  papra-(i), with the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root *bher- ‘to carry’ and concludes that the meaning must be ‘to carry (off)’ (thus adopted in Sasseville 2021a:30f., Yakubovich & Mouton 2023a, and here).Earlier attempts now outdated came from Meriggi 1957b:71: ‘to blow, whiff’, Laroche in DLL:77 ‘to chase’ followed in HW:426, CLL:166, HED PA:120, Lehrman 1998a:149, HHw:119, Frotscher 2012a:151, Shevoroshkin 2012a:475, but convincingly counter-argued by Melchert 2016a:205, and Starke 1990a:134 ‘to announce, curse’.

1.1.5Stem

With Sasseville 2021a:30 (contra Melchert 2016a:204f. and Lehrman 1998a:149), the 3sg. pres. act. form paratti identifies the verb as a stem in -a-(ti), a denominative deriving from a noun *para- ‘carrying, removal’ vel. sim. and to be distinguished from the root verb par-(ti).

2.1Reconstruction ‘to carry (off)’

The equation between CLuw. para-(ti) ‘to carry (off)’ and Lyc. *para-(ti) (the derivational base of pabra-(ti) ‘to commission’ and Lyc. B pubra-(ti)) speaks for the reconstruction of a Proto-Luwic factitive verb *bhoréh2- ‘to carry (off)’ derived from an action noun *bhoréh2- ‘carrying (vel sim.)’.
