1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. doppelter Glossenkeilba-ra-ti-i[š] KBo 18.170a rev. 11’ (CTH 246, NS)
  pa-ra-ti-iš KUB 13.33 ii 7’ (CTH 295, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The function of the diagonal imprint before pa-ra-ti-iš at KUB 13.33 ii 7’ is unclear, it may or may not be a gloss wedge. – Siegelová 1986a:486 and Burgin 2022a:420 read doppelter GlossenkeilBA-RA-TI-I[T-TI-NU] at KBo 18.170a rev. 11’, which is also possible as far as the shape of the sign on the edge of the tablet is concerned. However, gloss wedges are not normally used to mark Akkadographic spellings. – The attestation of the putatively foreign word with initial ba- in KUB 13.33 ii 7’ can be added to the list in Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:218; see also Kloekhorst 2010a:225f.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of baratiš- is not entirely clear. On account of the context of the genitival attribute ŠA KUŠKA.TAB.ANŠU ‘bridles’ in KBo 18.170a rev. 11’-12’, Košak 1982a:230 (followed by Melchert in CLL:167 and DCL:s.v., HEG L-P:450, and HHw:121) suggests a translation in the semantic field of bridles. Siegelová 1986a:486 comes to the same conclusion and translates ‘handle’, although she reads doppelter GlossenkeilBA-RA-TI-I[T-TI-NU] assigning the word to Akk./Hurr. parattitinnu ‘handle (of bridles or whips)’ (cf. AHw:832, Richter 2012a:299).Undecided Burgin 2022a:420f. (reading doppelter GlossenkeilBA-RA-TI-I[T-TI-NU]), Werner 1967a:34f., and Ünal 2007a:396.

1.1.5Stem

While Košak 1982a:230 and Melchert (CLL:167) list doppelter Glossenkeilbarati- as an i-stem, Melchert (DCL:s.v.) argues for a neuter s-stem paratiš- (following CHD P:142). This analysis is based on the attestation at KUB 13.33 ii 7’f., which shows the neuter pronoun =at in line 8’ referring to paratiš in the preceding clause.

1.1.6Origin

The spelling with the word-initial sign BA may indicate a foreign origin (see Kloekhorst 2010a:225, Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:218), which is supported by the attestation of doppelter Glossenkeilbarati[š] with gloss wedges. Melchert (DCL:s.v.) suggests a Luwian origin; likewise Tischler (HEG L-P:450), who connects doppelter Glossenkeilbarati[š] with CLuw. parai- (i.e. CLuw. para-) and Hitt. parḫ- ‘to chase’.Outdated is the proposal by Güterbock 1956a:130, who links it to CLuw. paratta- now translated as ‘impurity’, rendering the connection impossible.
