1.1.4Meaning

The derivational relationship between para-(ti) at KUB 35.43 ii 10 and reduplicated papra-(i) ibid. ii 12 was noted already in DLL:77 and never called into question. The present interpretation of the semantics as ‘to carry (off)’ follows Melchert 2016a:203-206, who points out that the verb denotes an action by which the sheep removes the evil from the ritual patron. He supports his suggestion with the etymological comparison with PIE *bher- ‘to carry’ (see under Reconstruction). The translation is accepted by Sasseville 2021a:30f., Yakubovich & Mouton 2023a:255, as well as here. The previous translation ‘to chase’ going back to DLL:77 (and accepted in HW:426, CLL:166, HED PA:120, Lehrman 1998a:149, HHw:119, Frotscher 2012a:151, Shevoroshkin 2012a:475) was based on the assonance with Hitt. parḫ- ‘to chase’. It proved to be incompatible with the preservation of -ḫ- in CLuw. parḫ(a)- and HLuw. *501-ha- ‘to chase’ (see Melchert 2016a:205). – Incomprehensible is the interpretation as ‘to announce, curse’ by Starke 1990a:134.

1.1.5Stem

For the reduplication, see under Meaning. While Sasseville 2021a:31 still assumed that both a factitive stem in papra-(ti) and a ḫi-verb papra-(i) were equally possible, the reading [pa-ap-ra]-⸢i⸣= at KBo 29.20, 6’ with the rest of the upper two horizontal strokes still visible proves the latter to be correct (see also Yakubovich & Mouton 2023a:346).
