Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:379 connects the reconstructed base *šāḫuid- with the PIE root *seh2- ‘to bind’ (see PAnat. *seh2-En-). They explain the lenition of the laryngeal via an accented o-grade, whose validity is still problematic (see ibid. with further literature). The root would be in this case followed by an adjectival u-stem, i.e. *šāḫ-u-, and an abstract formation in -id-, i.e. *šāḫuid-. Despite the attractivity of the scenario, its historical account (as well as the synchronic analysis of the derivatives) must be considered tentative until further evidence emerges.
