1.1.4Meaning
The form
šaḫuidaran functions as the adjectival attribute of the following noun an.daḫ.šumSAR ‘crocus (?)’ in an oracular inquiry into the reasons for a deity’s wrath, but the rest of the clause remains obscure (see the various options considered in CHD Š:12). Laroche’s (DLL:84, followed in HHw:138 and Yakubovich 2000a:144) tentative interpretation as ‘régulier, normal’ relies on the phonologically inacceptable equation with Hitt. šakuwaššara-, now also rendered differently as ‘complete, entire, full, intact’ (for the rejection of the match, see already Oettinger 1978a:79 n. 21, as well as CLL:184 and HEG Š:699; without gloss also HW:332 and Ünal 2007a:580). Based on etymological considerations regarding the reconstructed stem *šāḫuid- ‘binding’, Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:380 n. 21 and Melchert (DCL:s.v.) translate
šaḫuidara(/i)- with ‘knotted’, thus “not in bloom” and “unfit for ritual use.”
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Melchert (DCL:s.v.) plausibly derives
šaḫuidara(/i)- from *šāḫuid- ‘binding’ (base *šaḫu- + suffix -i(t)-), but offers no details for stem final -ara/i-. Possible analyses of the suffix are -a- + -ra/i- and -ar- + -a/i-.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
The Luwian origin of
šaḫuidara/i- emerges not only from the use of the gloss wedges, but also from the Luwian suffix -i(t)- and the fact that lexemes derived from *šāḫuid- exclusively occur in Luwian context. It is assumed in DLL:84, Oettinger 1978a:79 n. 21, CLL:184, Yakubovich 2000a:144, HHw:138, van den Hout 2006a:245, HEG Š:699, and CHD Š:12.
