1.1.4Meaning ‘medium for binding or substitute for binding (?)’

No meaning was assigned to šāḫuidāl- in DLL:84, CLL:184 and HHw:138. Its first in-depth treatment was done only recently by Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a. The two scholars demonstrate that several derivatives of the bases *šaḫuit- and *wit- form merisms in the context of the purification rituals from the Kuwattalla tradition. The items designated by the instrument nouns šāḫuidāl- and witāl- serve as tools for “assisting the gods in removing the malign phenomena” (ibid. 376) of the ritual patron, which, on typological and etymological grounds, are specified as ‘binding’ and ‘smiting’. The concrete nature of the tools is unknown, but a generic ‘medium for binding/smiting’ or ‘substitute for binding/smiting’ as considered by Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:376f. certainly constitute likely options.

1.1.5Stem

Following Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:376, šāḫuidāl- derives from *šāḫuid- ‘binding (?)’ (base *šaḫu- + suffix -i(t)-), built with the instrument noun suffix -āl-.
