1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is reasonably secure despite a lack of direct cognates in the other Anatolian languages that use a different writing system. Within HLuw., the word is closely connected to /zala/, likewise a preverb.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
Within the HLuw. corpus, this lexeme is found as a preverb solely with the verb /tu(wa)-(i)/ ‘to put’ (thus already Poetto 1980b:129f.) and mostly used in the protases of curse formulae in phrases of the type “or (whoever) puts it ZALAN”. For that reason, Hawkins 2000a:357 understands it to denote “an offensive act” that can be executed against borders, cities, and objects such as statues. As a possible interpretation for /zalan/, one could suggest ‘aside’, and /zalan tu(wa)-/ could hence mean ‘to put aside, to shift’.

1.1.5Stem
The lexeme /zalan/ is clearly related to /zala/, likewise a preverb, through not necessarily derived from it. Rieken 2019b:310 n. 2 suggests that /zala/ and /zalan/ may relate to one another in the same way as Hittite /anda/ and /andan/ and similar pairs, for whose meanings and etymologies see Boroday & Yakubovich 2018a:20.
Outdated is the tentative analysis of the word as a noun by Poetto 1980b:129f.
Another suggestion (not followed here) by Yakubovich (reported as pers. comm. in Sasseville 2021a:413f.) views the present word as /zallan/, related to CLuw. zala- ‘trot’ and HLuw. /zallall(a)-/ ‘cart’.
