1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably secure and based on the shape of its derivational basis /alant-/ ‘place’, but suffers from the same uncertainty regarding the second vowel, which may be /i/ after all.The rhotacized and hypercorrectly spelt 〈“DOMUS-LOCUS”-tà-ta-la-si-[…]〉 at KAYSERİ, §2a does not provide the incontrovertible proof for /a/ as it may seem, since the sign 〈tà〉 (*41) has been found to represent /di/ in some cases, in addition to the far more frequent /da/, cf. Simon 2019f:330f. The suffix /-alla/i-/ is well-known from many other formations and therefore certain.

With respect to the spelling, the attestations consistently include the logogram (sign *201), tying the present lexeme securely to its derivational base, but also to the semantic domain around EARTH, since /taskwar(i)-/ ‘earth’ uses the same logogram (there read: ), see Laroche 1960c:109-111.

1.1.4Meaning

The basic semantics of this word have been clear for some time, not least because the meaning of its derivational base /alant-/ ‘place’ was transparent from use in the KARATEPE 1 bilingual inscription, cf. the discussion there. The assigned denotation receives contextual support e.g. in MARAŞ 14, §2: *a-wa/i-mu-i za-na LOCUS-la/i-ta-li-i-na á-mi-sa (DOMINUS)na-ni-sá pi-ia-ta, approx. /a=wa=mu zan alantallin amis nanis piyatta/, meaning ‘My master gave this precinct to me, (and I built these military houses for myself)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:266).

1.1.5Stem

This word represents a substantivized adjective in /-alla/i-/, derived from the noun /alant-/ ‘place’. As a noun, it is treated as a common gender and subject to i-mutation with the change between /a/ and /i/ in the stem clearly visible throughout the paradigm.
