1.1.3Meaning
The word τorsa is surely the direct object of the predicate ištro[ ‘to hand over (vel sim.)’ (cf. Gusmani 1975b:16). Gusmani 1972c:162 with n. 10 suggests a connection with HLuw. /tuwaris(a)-/ ‘vineyard’ also attested as a personal name, although he refrains from this approach due to the insurmountable phonological problems (cf. Gusmani 1980a:104f.). He had already recognized that Lyd. -o- may correspond to Luw. -uwa-. However, based on the current research on Lydian phonology, the rest can be more easily explained as a palatalization of *d(h) to Lyd. c or τ before u and i (for the interchange c and τ in word-initial position, see Sasseville 2021a:520f. as well as Lyd. cawλo- and its derivative). Furthermore, a syncope between r and s is needed to explain the discrepancy, yet it is unproblematic. In any case, there is no phonological problem with this etymology, although further contextual support would be welcome. The word τorsa is left untranslated by Dusinberre 2003a:234.
