1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word can be regarded as certain, because CLuw. features two cognates, the common gender noun [X] malwara- and the neuter gender [X] doppelter Glossenkeilmalwan-, both also without a semantic interpretation.

Outdated is the suggestion by Eichner 1985a:7-10 that the word is to be taken together with the preceding logogram STELE and that /malwa-/ represents the word for ‘stele’, see Hawkins 1995a:97.

1.1.4Meaning

The semantics of this word have so far remained beyond our reach, not least because the word occurs three times in largely identical clauses.Based on the erroneous reading †〈(STELE)ma-lu-wa/i〉, Eichner 1985a:7-10 proposed the meaning ‘sign, stele’ vel sim., which cannot be upheld under the correct reading.EMİRGAZİ 1A, §19 runs: ma-pa-wa/i *414.OVIS-za/i kwa/i-tá-za/i STELE ma-lu-wa/i CRUS, approx. /man=ba=wa …-anz kwattanz wani=za malwa tai/, perhaps translating as ‘If for which (cult objects) a stele (or: stelae?) stands in a malwa- manner (?), (if anyone should erase them)’ (cf. Hawkins 1995a:89).Hawkins interprets some of the forms differently, reading approx. /man=ba=wa …-nzi kwattanz wanidanz malwa tai/, translating ‘But if for which stelae the *414-sheep stand malwa’, which seems a less good fit from a semantic point of view.

1.1.5Stem

The HLuw. word appears to be an indeclinable adverb, positioned immediately before the verb in the contexts of attestation. Without further semantic information, any morphological assessment remains hypothetical.
