nom. sg. or dat. pl.(?) mluhidaza TL 84.4 (Sura)

Hajnal 1995a:166 n. 201 and Melchert (DLL:41) prefer interpreting mluhidaza in TL 84.4 as dat. pl., although a nominative singular subject for hãxxati would be a more obvious choice. Schürr 2001e:150 and Neumann 2007a:221 leave it open.

1.1.3Meaning

Considering its formation with the suffix -aza- and its apposition to the personal name Mizretije, mluhidaza- must designate a title. The owner of the tomb Mizretije is called the mluhidaza surezi ‘mluhidaza-official of (the town) Sura’ (Laroche 1979c:99, Bryce 1980a:42 n. 7). That the title has a sacred connotation is made likely by the religious context as well as by the tempting etymology with HLuw. ma-lu-wa/i- (Bugge 1897a:86, Schürr 2001e:150, DLL:41, Neumann 2007a:221, Gehrisch 2018a:130). A more precise meaning cannot be given.

1.1.4Stem

The noun mluhidaza- can be analyzed as a denominal formation in -aza- derived from *mluhid- (for the suffix -hid-; cf. mahanahid-) (thus Schürr 2001e:150, DLL:41). The base *mlu- can be connected with Lyc. A mlun͂te, but not with the acc. sg. mlu, which belongs to the noun mla- (contra Schürr 2001e:150).
