Pace Gusmani 1964a:178, qaašliš is nominative plural because of the verbal form fawkufot (3. pl. pres.). For the differentiation of 3sg. and 3pl. present in Lydian, see Sasseville 2021a:61f., (and for stems in -o-(d)) 184.

1.1.3Meaning

Because of his semantic interpretation of qaša- as ‘possession (?)’, Gusmani 1964a:178f. translates qašl(i)- as ‘the possessing one’. Schürr 2006b:1577 (and Schürr 2011a:77 n. 1), on the other hand, translates it as ‘the partaking one’ without further justification. However, if one translates qaša- as ‘fee, rental price (?)’ instead, the meaning of qašl(i)- must be slightly modified. From a morphological perspective, qašl(i)- is correctly recognized by Gusmani 1964a:178f. as a substantive in -l(i)- and not as a genitival adjective in -l(i)-. In other words, it is simply a substantivized genitival adjective, which has been lexicalized, i.e. qaša- ‘fee, rental price (?)’ → *qašl(i)- ‘of the fees/rental price (?)’ → (subs.) qašl(i)- ‘the one of the rental price, the one who rents (out), renter (?)’. For the retraction of the accent in the genitival adjective of a-stems followed by syncope of the stem vowel, see Sasseville 2017a:138f.

From a contextual perspective, the stele LW 12 provides further instructions concerning the tomb made by the owner of the stele, i.e. Šaros, (child) of Šiwãm, to be applied after his death. Since it is said that the soul of the deceased will not be beneficial to the qašl(i)-, it is likely that qašl(i)- represents someone performing an unwanted action towards the grave. Therefore, it likely means ‘the one who is offering a rental price (for the grave), the one who rents (the grave) out’. For further evidence see under the compound niqašl(i)-.
