1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. pár-t]a-aš KBo 18.170 obv. 9 (CTH 243, NS)
  pár-ta-aš KUB 42.34, 19 (CTH 241, NS)
    KUB 42.43 obv. 13’ (CTH 243, NS)
    KBo 31.53, 4’ (CTH 246, NS)

The form partianza adduced in CHD P:197 and elsewhere cannot belong to this lemma on formal grounds, but is treated separately (see under Lemma partiant- with references).

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – On the outdated reading maš-ta-aš instead of pár-ta-aš, advocated by Košak 1982a:56 and followed by Siegelová 1986a:611, see CHD P:197. – Restoration pár-t]a-aš at KBo 18.170 obv. 9 follows mutatis mutandis Košak 1982a:109, who reads maš-ta-aš.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The first syllable is spelled consistently with the CVC sign pár, which contrasts with the spelling of the Cuneiform Luwian word pa-(a-)ar-ta-(a-)ti ‘with the legs/hooves’ (see also Raggi Braglia 1989a:211). At least within Hittite, the difference between a C1V1C2 spelling and one with C1V1-V1-V1C2 speaks for a phonological difference and, therefore, against an exact match. However, little is known so far about the effects on vowels of borrowing Luwian words into Hittite, and thus the match cannot be excluded on this basis.

1.1.4Meaning

The nom. sg. partaš occurs in inventory texts together with beds, bed linen and bedsteads. The parta- can be inlaid with gold and made of ivory. Assuming that the word is identical with the stem of CLuw. pārta- ‘leg, hoof’ despite the difference of spelling (see under Phonological Interpretation), it is plausible that it refers “to furniture legs or the carved hooves, paws, or talons at the bottom of a furniture leg” (CHD P:197; cf. also HEG L-P:506, Tischler 2008a:140; Ünal 2007a:528; differently HED:173f.: see Lemma parta(/i)-).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

Within Hittite, the lexeme can be classified as a common gender a-stem. However, that does not allow to specify the stem of the putative underlying noun in Luwian, for which part(i)- c., parta- c. and, less likely, a neuter part(a)- have to be considered possible.
