1.1.4Meaning

Regardless of the nominal or verbal status of Glossenkeilpapartama, the context seems to indicate that the phrase denotes a destructive act against the goddess Ištar; cf. Starke 1990a:276, CLL:165, Shevoroshkin 1994a:146. +[No suggestions beyond “an epithet of Ištar” (vel sim.) are made in Beckman 1983a:178f., 198, CHD P:100, HHw:119, HEG P:424, Giorgieri 2004a:416, Ünal 2007a:510, Bachvarova 2013a:138, DCL:174; phonologically impossible: HED P:69. Melchert (DCL:174) further assumes that the stem underlying doppelter Glossenkeilpa-pa-ar-ta-ma-〈an〉 is related to papartam(i)-. If so, and furthermore, if paparta-(i) (probably attested in papartamienzi, s.v. papartama/i-) is the reduplicated variant of the root verb part- ‘to escape (?)’, then the relevant sentence Dištar-an doppelter Glossenkeilpa-pa-ar-ta-ma-an a-uš-du means “let him see the goddess Istar fleeing!”, similar to “likewise (= let him see) the wolf fettered!” and other phrases in the immediate context that describe dire or impossible actions and states (see Beckman 1983a:178f.).

An analogous interpretation as ‘dismembered’ (Yakubovich 2017d:s.v.) is probably based on an assumed relationship with a reconstructed denominative verb derived from parta- ‘(furniture) leg (?)’, i.e. the lexeme belongs to same word family, but relates to a different lexeme with a separate semantic development.

1.1.5Stem

Following Starke 1990a:276, the verb that constitutes the base of doppelter Glossenkeilpa-pa-ar-ta-ma-an〉 can very likely be classified as a reduplicated -a-(i) verb. Among the two options, viz. participle and -m(ma)n- abstract noun, the former is preferred here on account of the parallel participial phrases in the context and in spite of the wrongly built form in -an (instead of -in).

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin of doppelter Glossenkeilpa-pa-ar-ta-ma-an〉 was never in doubt (Beckman 1983a:198, Starke 1990a:276, CLL:165, Shevoroshkin 1994a:146, CHD P:100, HHw:119, Giorgieri 2004a:416, van den Hout 2006a:247, Ünal 2007a:510, Bachvarova 2013a:138, Yakubovich 2017d:s.v., DCL:174).
