1.1.3Meaning ‘anger, wrath’

The meaning of httẽmi is similar to the one of its derivational base httẽm̃ ‘angry’ (cf. Neumann 1979b:262f.). However, the more precise meaning ‘anger, wrath’ is attributed by Schürr 1997b:63, who recognizes  that httẽmi is a substantive as opposed to httẽm̃; see under Stem.

1.1.4Stem

Schürr 1997b:63 points out rightly that httẽmi must be a substantive because of the modifying genitival adjectives, e.g. in TL 65.23f. (contra Neumann 1979b:262f.). He suggests a derivative in -i(je)-, i.e. httẽm-i(je)-. Melchert ([5699] DLL:26), on the other hand, analyses httẽmi as a substantivized participle, i.e. httẽme/i- c. Since the suffix -i(je)- is desubstantival, the latter hypothesis is morphologically more likely.
