/parnawa-/, (“DOMUS.CRUX”)pa+ra/i-na-wa/i-

‘to serve, be in service’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested three times in inscriptions from Commagene, dating to the late 9th or early 8th century, and Cilicia, dating to the early 7th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

3pl. impv. act. /parnawantu/ (CRUX)pa+ra/i-na-wa/i-tu-u KARATEPE 1 (Hu.), §58 (Cilicia)
    (“DOMUS.CRUX”)pa+ra/i-na-wa/i-tu4 KARATEPE 1 (Ho.), §58 (Cilicia)
  /parnuwantu/ (“MANUS”)pa+ra/i-nu-wa/i-tu ANCOZ 5, §1 (Commagene)

The attestation at ANCOZ 5, §1 shows a different vocalisation in the stem and may therefore constitute a separate verb. However, the context of attestation is too uncertain, and the word is hence included with the present lexeme for the time being.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably certain. The fully syllabic spellings in HLuw. are further supported by the word belonging to the family around /parn(a)-/ ‘house’. Moreover, the present verb has cognates in Hitt./Luw. parnawāi-ške/a- ‘to annex’ and Lycian A prñnawa-(ti) ‘to build’, see Sasseville 2021a:50.

The choice of logograms differs somewhat from /parn(a)-/ ‘house’, which relies on (sign *247)

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning was recognised by Bossert 1956b:51 in the context of the KARATEPE 1 bilingual inscription, where /parnawa-/ translates Phoenician yʿbd ‘may they serve’. Earlier attempts had considered a meaning ‘to build’ (e.g. Heubeck 1959a:45), but this is contextually inappropriate and has since been shown to be morphologically unlikely, cf. the discussion of the stem below. Thus, KARATEPE 1 (Hu.), §58 runs: ma-pa-wa/i (CRUX)pa+ra/i-na-wa/i-tu-u (LITUUS)á-za-ti-wa/i-tà-ia mu-ka-sa-sá-há-a DOMUS-ní-i (DEUS)TONITRUS-hu-ta-[ti] DEUS-na-ti-há, approx. /man=ba=wa parnawantu Azzattiwadaya Muksassan=ha parni Tarhuntadi massanadi=ha/, meaning ‘But much they shall be in service to the house of Azzatiwada and Mopsus by (the Storm-god) Tarhunt and the gods!’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:56).

1.1.5Stem

This verb is likely a factitive in /-a-(ti)/ (although /-a-(di)/ cannot be excluded), deriving from the stem */parnawa(/i)-/ ‘equating to a house’ vel sim., which is unattested in HLuw., but has a cognate in Lycian prñnawa- ‘that which equates to a house, grave-house’, see Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:310 and Sasseville 2021a:50.
