/tabariyalli(ya)-/, LEPUS+ra/i-ia-li-

‘gubernatorial, governor’s’

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. /tabariyallis/ LEPUS+ra/i-ia-li-i-sa MARAŞ 1, §1b (Maraş)
    LEPUS2+ra/i-ia-li-sa MARAŞ 1, §1g (Maraş)
nom./acc. sg. n. /tabariyallin=za/ LEP[US2]+RA/I? KARKAMIŠ N seal, §1 (Karkamiš)

The reading of the sign 〈+ra/i〉 at KARKAMIŠ N seal, §1 is doubtful, because its thorn-like shape is not slanted, but takes the horizontal position exactly where the tail of the rabbit-shaped would be, cf. Dinçol, Dinçol & Peker 2014a:164.

1.1.3Graphic Features

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Due to its transparent morphology, the phonological interpretation of this adjective is quite clear. It derives directly from the likewise attested /tabariyalla/i-/ ‘governor’.

In the attestations for this word, the logogram (sign *115) appears in its two variations, viz. the depiction of the head and neck of a hare () and that of the full animal () without any discernible difference in meaning. MARAŞ 1, §1b features a rare cursive form of the sign. The alternation is common throughout the word family.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word is clear from its morphology, see the discussion of the stem below. As is expected for such a form, it occurs in possessive constructions, e.g. in the long genealogy in MARAŞ 1, §1b: Ila+ra/i+a-ma-si-i-sa LEPUS+ra/i-ia-li-i-sa INFANS-mu-wa/i-za-sá, approx. /Larammassis tabariyallis nimuwizzas/, translating as ‘Commander Laramma’s son’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:262f.).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

An adjective of appurtenance, the word is formed with the common suffix /-i(ya)-/ from the substantivised base /tabariyalla/i-/ ‘governor’, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197.
