1.1.3Meaning

The meaning ‘to hand over’ was offered this verb in LW 24.21 in Meriggi 1935a:74 and it appears also to be compatible with the other context where this form occurs. Thus there is no significant difference in meaning between the stems tor- and tro-

1.1.4Stem

According to Melchert 1992a:52 n. 30, the stem tor- merely reflects the metathesis of in one form of the paradigm of tro-. This, however, appears to be unlikely, because the forms fakantrow and kantoru occur in the same inscription LW 23. The solution tentatively adopted here implies instead that the stem tor- goes back to the root-stem *tarw- or its secondary thematization *tarwV-. As an alternative, one can reconstruct the stem *tarwi- > tori-, the lexical cognate of Luw. /trawi-(ti)/ (cf. Lyd. qištori-). The problem of choosing between these two analyses arises because we do not seem to have independent evidence for the presence or absence of the stem-forming suffix -id- in 1sg. pres. The stem tor- is so far only attested with the prefix kan-.
